While building my small goldfish pond I had many people tell me that my fish would die in the Winter; as it dips below zero a few times where I live. I wondered if I left my fish to the elements without cold weather protection if they would indeed survive or die. The short answer is goldfish and koi are resilient and will indeed survive cold Winters in iced over ponds. Watch the video for more in-depth info as I go over the feeding cycle as well. This is what I feed my goldfish: https://amzn.to/3GkU25g
I have my goldfish pond for over three years and never had a fish die over the winter. I don’t use any weather protection and the pond is about 3 feet deep at the deepest point. I do run a small tube from the bottom of the pond to the top in order to allow the release of any built up gases and help with oxygen levels. The fish seek out warm pockets of water and hibernate, turn self-made alcohol into heat.
